Scorpion trike

We have a Scorpion trike on test - report coming up in Issue 22 - and it attracted plenty of interest, as above, at the recent Bike Right event.

Now, the manufacturers have announced a new model, to be launched at the SPEZI show in Germany this weekend. While our model uses the standard SRAM Dual-Drive gears (9 speed derailleur with three speed hub) the new 81-speed model extends the range further with a front triple chainring, controlled by a bar end shifter.

The result is a gear range of 12.3" to 123" (0.98 - 9.81 m travelled per turn of the pedals) - and of course on a trike you can take advantage of the low gears to go as slow as you like without any balance problems.

More details and pics when we return from the SPEZI.

Looks interesting! What is the US marketing cost going to be? My wife needs to ride a recumbent trike due to balance issues from surgical removal of an inner ear, and this looks like something nice to consider.

The option adds 279 Euros - so about £200 or $350...

Cyclist: "What gear're you in?"
Scorpion rider: "Erm, one, two, three, four,... multiplied by two, plus three... er... Hello? Where did he go?"

What kind of torque load can that dual Drive handle without the epi-cycloid internal gizzards going crunch, while trailer towing your stuff? Rohloff is clear in saying no lower than 2.4:1 chainring to cog ratio or the warrentee goes poof!

Quite a lot - DualDrives are used quite a bit on load-carriers...
